It’s Just Who We Are

APHW Team Player of the YearIt’s a rare thing to feel like you’re on the right path. Andrew Mertz has felt this every day since becoming an Area Sales Manager (ASM) for America’s Preferred Home Warranty (APHW), in helping other new and upcoming ASMs to succeed—yet he was surprised when they rewarded him for it.

“It was surreal,” Andrew said after APHW named him Team Player of the Year at their annual Sales Meeting in January. “It was humbling to say the least, looking at the lineup of folks recognized in past years. But I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary; it’s just who we are.”

True, but Andrew’s efforts across 2018 still stand out. He actively built relationships with each new ASM and other new staff members—75 in 2018 alone—and he stepped up every time an event came up near his territory of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. Being helpful just seems to come naturally for him. “If you’re willing and able to help, why wouldn’t you?” he asked.

Back when Andrew first started, however, things were a little different. “I didn’t know the first thing about home warranties,” he said, and he didn’t know what he could offer to APHW. The thing is, they weren’t looking for an expert on home warranties—they had something else in mind.

“I’d been involved in a couple different lines of work, from corporate finance to the restaurant industry to Two Men and a Truck,” Andrew said. “Every step of the way was customer service through and through, and after the most thorough interview process I’ve ever experienced, it was clear to me: Every action I’d taken in life led me right here. It was clearly a God thing—it was like I was designed to be here.”

If you’re thinking about a career change, consider sales with APHW. “I don’t even consider myself a salesperson by trade,” Andrew said. “I’m more of a customer service person who happens to do sales. Regardless of where you’re coming from, if you’re trainable, we’ll give you the tools to succeed.”
